Civil engineering one of the first engineering courses which is available today, along with mechanical engineering. It is the knowledge that has been passed on and improvised since the very beginning of human civilization when humans built their first shelter to protect themselves from animals and rain. Infrastructure is always growing due to the growing population and urbanization. Hence, the demand for civil engineers has also increased along with the construction business. But the role of a civil engineer is not always the same. Civil engineering offers a variety of career options based on what kind of job you would like to prefer. Here are the ten jobs you can explore to find the one that fits your interests.

Construction engineering

You will be managing construction projects and overlooking the work on the construction site. You will be looking after the planning, execution, material quality, transportation, equipment, and workforce until the site is complete.

Structural engineering

You will be analyzing the structural designs of buildings, bridges, towers, tunnels, offshore structures, and other construction sites. You will have to consider the natural and artificial effects on the infrastructure and identify its load to make safer structures which can support the right load.

Surveying engineering

You will be shaping and levelling a piece of land to make it idle for construction. This role will demand you to travel to new sites and use the right equipment and tools to measure and level the property. Plane surveying and geodetic surveying are the other two subcategories in this job role.

Forensic engineering

In this job, you will have to visit the failed sites and identify the reasons why the site could not work. You will need to investigate and question the entire team involved in the failed project to find out if there was something wrong with the quality of the products or the workforce was inefficient.

Coastal engineering

You will be designing and constructing coastal and marine structures like groynes and embankments. Coastal engineering is one of the trending roles that you can choose.

Transportation engineering

You will be designing and constructing new  roadways and flyovers and maintaining the old roadways and other public transportation systems. The skillset of a transportation engineer should have the ability to improve the overall traffic movement with their road designs.

Water resource engineering

You can also choose to be an engineer who works on designing and constructing hydraulic structures like dams and canals. Along with which you will also take care of the safety of the people and the environment which can get affected by your projects.

Geotechnical engineering

You will be studying the rocks and the soil of a place to learn how you can use the place for construction purposes. You will also be considering the natural risks, such as earthquake, landslides, rockfalls, etc. which can cause damage to the future constructions.
